The story is from the viewpoint of T***, a boy just entering his teens.

“…mother probably got hung up in traffic somewhere…[her job is in another city] selling underwear…I wonder what it’s like watching ladies try on underwear all day? I’d really like to get a look at that!” (p.5)

“…shouldn’t think about what you have to do to get somebody pregnant…sometimes I just can’t help it.” (p.8)

T*** and his family move to a new city and T*** becomes friends with J***, the boy living next door. “Our gym teacher told us if we start to think about those things [sex] we should keep our mind on sports and that will help…He told us about wet dreams, too.” (p.49)

“When I read J***’s paperbacks I can feel myself get hard…when I’m not even thinking…it goes up too.” (p.50)

“Suppose it decides to go up in school and everybody notices?” (p.50)

J*** invites T*** to go to the store. J*** pays for some paper and then shoplifts some items (p.52). T*** does nothing about the theft.

J*** also has a sister named L***, whose bedroom happens to face T***’s. “With all my lights turned off and with her lights turned on, I can see everything…what she was doing was getting undressed.” (p.73)

“…if I had binoculars I could see her really good – up close…” (p.92)

T*** has a dream about L***:

“…L*** put her arm around me…she didn’t stop there…C**** [another girl at school] was in it too…L*** kept saying ‘You see, C****…here’s what to do…’” (pp.92-93)

“I woke up…I felt wet and my pajamas were sticky…” (p.93)

“Maybe I had a wet dream…thought’s they’d be different…thought a lot more stuff would come out…”(p.93)

He changes his pajamas and uses a wet washcloth to make everything in the hamper damp, then returns to his bed (p.93):

“…there was a spot on my sheet…It was dam…does that stuff stain?” (p.93)

T*** asks for binoculars for Christmas. He dreams about Lisa again, with C**** in it, too (p.97).

His dad gives him a book on sex (p.100).

T*** reads it and notices: “There’s a whole section on wet dreams and another on masturbation.” (p.101)

He gets what he wants for Christmas and watches L*** through the window.

In the end, he has a “funny dream” about C**** looking like L***.

The very end of the book states: I think what I’ll do is – I’ll go home and put my binoculars away on the top shelf of my closet…so they’re hard to get. Then again, maybe I won’t. (p.164)
