Are You In The House Alone?
Summary from the Library of Congress Cataloging-in-Publication Data: Not Available on inside page of paperback edition.
A paragraph from the back of the book: “Forget it,” A***** counseled. “It never happened.” But it was happening. The obscene notes. “Stop reading that garbage!” A***** shrieked and grabbed the neatly lettered page from G***’s frozen hands. And whenever G*** was alone, the phone rang and went dead as soon as she answered it. As her world shaded into a nightmare, G***, surrounded by friends, family, and teachers found herself utterly alone.
Excerpts:
The book begins with G*** and her boyfriend having sneaking out to have sex:
“…S**** and I would slip out to the [his family’s] cottage on the lake, Powdermill Lake. How often? Ten times? Twelve? I don’t remember now…” “The best part was the way we seemed to be absolutely alone together. And now I know we weren’t alone out there at all. Someone was watching us, maybe every time.” (Prologue)
She then goes on to talk about various groups in school: “The heads were at the top, running the Student Council during the week and smoking joints…” (p.16).
S****, G***’s boyfriend, wanted to have sex with her, but she refused. He then asks her whether she is still taking the pill and she replies with a “Yes.” (p.21).
G*** recalls her visit to Planned Parenthood right after she turned 16 (p.32).
“Like every other two people drawing together, we [she and S****] were brother and sister, and then we were lovers.”(p.35)
She finds her first note in her locker: “I’M WATCHING YOU, YOU—“ That’s almost the only line I can make myself repeat now. … All the things someone thought I was…someone planned to do to me, to make me do. Ever perverted, sadistic, sick…act. A twisted porno movie… …at the bottom … centered perfectly [the rest of the note]: YOU KNOW YOU WANT IT. YOU’LL GET IT AND YOU WON’T HAVE LONG TO WAIT (p.48).
G*** skips school to see her father at work to tell him about the letter and harassing telephone calls. She finds him, but decides not to tell him. She keeps walking, when a stranger steps in front of her and says “Hey, momma, watcher hurry? Want a little action? Wanna get it on?...”(p.69). She avoids him and goes home, only to find herself explaining to her mother how she managed to get The Pill from Planned Parenthood (pp. 73-75).
She gets the second note: I’M STILL WATCHING YOU, AND I’M GETTING CLOSER, YOU LITTLE…[note ends] (p.82).
G*** is watching a woman’s children for the evening. The kids were asleep upstairs. She receives more phone calls: “ARE YOU IN THE HOUSE ALONE?” (p.103)
She checks on the girls sleeping upstairs. The doorbell rings and P***, A*****’s boyfriend is at the door asking to use the phone to call his girlfriend. G*** lets him in and she heard the same voice: “ARE YOU IN THE HOUSE ALONE?” It was P*** (p.105).
“Had you fooled, didn’t I , G***?”… “I’ve been keeping tabs on you. Checking you out…phone calls just to keep in touch. And the notes…something ought to be done about girls like you…” “…you don’t save it all for [her boyfriend], do you?” “…been very patient in my planning…very patient with you.” “…don’t worry, I don’t want you to do anything you haven’t already done…you’ve had more experience…this is your chance to share it…” (pp. 106-107)
She tries to break loose from him –
“Ah, no, G***, you don’t want to try anything like that. Nothing rough. Just think of me as [he mentions her boyfriend by last name]. He doesn’t go in for the rough stuff…Let’s both enjoy this…You’ve already lost what you’ve got to lose.” (p.107)
P*** rips her shirt off and then her necklace.
”I figured you wouldn’t have a bra on, G***…you’re a far cry from A*****, aren’t you?”
“He pulled my Levi’s down…the floor freezing cold under me…my hand brushed the base of the stand that held the fireplace tools…brass shovel and the broom and the poker.” “I made a grab for it…it fell over. P*** flattened himself on me…could feel his body slick with sweat…slammed his forearm against my throat...I felt the handle…I had one chance…I hope I kill him…” (pp. 108-109)
She swings and grazed his shoulder, he gets up: “…The last thing I remember is the poker in P***’s hand…just before he swung it down at my temple.” p.109)
She winds up in the hospital. The book describes the examinations she receives. She also consults a lawyer.
The police and even her best friend do not believe G*** because the guy who raped her is a “rich” kid with a family name. He rapes someone else, and then people start to realize he is a rapist. G*** and her family never filed a complaint and the second girl moves away.
According to rumors, P*** had a “nervous breakdown” and went to a hospital, but another said he went on to a boarding school in Vermont (p.171)
